Doubly terminated quartz crystals that grew free-floating in pockets of Cambrian dolostone, emerging with natural points at both ends and extraordinary clarity.
True Herkimers come only from the Mohawk Valley of New York and have both terminations natural, brilliant glassy faces and often carbon or water inclusions. Similar crystals from Pakistan and China are sold under the name but are properly 'Herkimer-type'.
Rinse only. Enhydro specimens holding water bubbles should not be heated.
Mined incidentally by Mohawk Valley settlers from the 1700s, who mistook them for diamonds.
